Young Carers and Siblings

Child/teens caring for parent/s living with any disability or children/teen whose brother/sister has any disability

This camp is a very important camp as is tailored to young carers and siblings who, in one way or another, their lives are intertwined with caring for a family member. The family member may be suffering from a physical or intellectual disability, mental illness, chronic, serious or terminal illness, autism or depression. Often , unintentionally,  the needs of these children are overlooked, as the family focuses on supporting the needs of the person living with the disability.

eg while attending a dance concert or football final and suddenly Mum & Dad have to rush off hospital with their sick sibling or parent. The objective at these camps is to give a sibling or young carer the opportunity for them to have fun in a safe caring environment. Camp Breakaway provides a range of activities that gives them a chance to encourage self-expression and confidence.

More importantly, we provide a safe environment to meet and form long-lasting friendships with children with similar lived experiences, mentors and allied professionals so they do not feel as if they are alone in their situation. This camp also provides an opportunity for them to have a few days’ respite in the company of peers, so they briefly escape their home life free from the rigorous responsibilities that is a major part of their daily life. It’s a chance just to be kids and have some fun.

Camp Breakaway receives no direct funds from any government source for this much-needed program. These programs are entirely funded through community, individual philanthropy and fundraising.
