This extended program of three to four days is where adults with disabilities can relax, while care is provided for their disability related needs. Camp Breakaway provides opportunities to form friendships while enjoying some amazing experiences thereby reducing social loneliness and isolation while improving individual self-esteem and confidence. The social impact and wellbeing usually extend well beyond the end of this program. It gives the participant a chance to socialise with other people, mentors and professionals who have similar lived experiences.
This program is particularly important for our participants who live with their parents, in group homes or aged care homes who may have little external contact with other people living with disabilities. Guest who resides in institutions are provided with a “break away” from their normal routines and environment. The programme provides a range of age appropriate social and sporting activities that may be new, challenging, and exciting. Activities can include sailing, tandem motorbike rides, and beach excursions with assisted access to get close to the water and sand.
The secondary feature of this program is to provide an opportunity for much needed respite to a carer and other members of the family. The program is well organised and chaperoned by our experience staff and volunteers, all who have Working with Children and Police checks. Camp Breakaway caters to a wide variety of adults living with a single or multiple disabilities.
